I am selling a
large number of S Scale items for people who contacted me for help
selling their collections.
I've
created ten new S Scale pages and updated the rest so my complete
inventory is now online. Check it out!
I
recently acquired five playsets that could be incorporated into a
train layout, or enjoyed by themselves as originally intended by
the manufacturer, or simply held as cherished collectibles. All
contain vehicles and buildings, and the farm set contains people,
animals, and other things you'd find on a farm. The highlight is
the rare Dukes of Hazzard set. All are 1:64 S scale. Three are
brand new in the original boxes. The other two lack the original
boxes but are in TCA Like New condition. Click
here for pictures and further information.
And I am in the
process of writing up a series of articles on various aspects of
the operation and maintenance of American Flyer equipment that I
call Bob's Top Tips. You can order them for $1.00 each plus first
class postage, but I'll slip it in the box with any equipment you
order and it won't add to the package shipping cost.
Sawmill
Maintenance: The Sawmill is perhaps Gilbert’s most
captivating and imaginative accessories, but its complexity means
that it requires the most attention. (In preparation)
Gilbert
Switches: Between the two branches of each switch, there
is a slide switch labeled "Reg. Oper.” (Regular
Operation) at one end and “2 train Oper." (2-train
Operation) at the other. It's a very useful thing, but rather
confusing, and the Gilbert instruction manuals give only a
superficial explanation. This edition of Bob's Top Tips explains
exactly what the slide switch does, and provides some helpful
suggestions on using it to make your railroad layout more
realistic and interesting.
Loose
“Tires” on Locomotive Driver Wheels: The
drive wheel on an engine is actually three parts: an inner hub,
the plastic white sidewall that fits over it, and the steel
"tire" that fits outside of that. It is not uncommon
for the tire to come loose from the plastic whitewall. Bob’s
Top Tips #3 describes steps to secure a loose tire.
Testing
Gilbert Switches: Testing is complicated by the Regular
and 2-train Operation modes and the fact that right and left hand
operate somewhat differently. Bob’s Top Tips #4 tells how
to thoroughly test Gilbert switches for correct operation in both
modes.
Transformer
Circuit Breakers: Some Gilbert transformers have a
circuit breaker and light that indicates a short circuit. Bob’s
Top Tips #5 tells what to do when the red light comes on and what
to do if the circuit breaker fails to trip when a short circuit
occurs. The pictures and procedure descriped apply to a 7B
transformer, but I think the 8B uses the same kind of breaker,
and others may as well. (In preparation)
Cleaning
Train Things: Engines, cars, accessories, and track need
occasional cleaning. Bob’s Top Tips #6 tells how. (In
preparation)
Flickering
Car Lights: The lights in most American Flyer passenger
cars, cabooses, and floodlight cars flicker as the train rolls
down the track. Bob’s Top Tips #7 describes steps to reduce
or eliminate the flicker.
Replacing
a broken knuckle coupler. (In preparation)
Servicing
an E-Unit: An E-Unit is the switch that causes an engine to change between running forward and running backward.
E-Units are notorious for sticking in one position and not switching. Bob’s Top Tips #9 tells how to fix that and
how to clean the drum and contacts when they get dirty. (In preparation)
I am still working
on these For Sale pages to provide more detailed notes to better
describe the condition of many items and to reflect updated
Greenberg book values. If you'd like more information about any
one or more items, email me; I'll dig them out and provide any
information you'd like.
For reference
purposes, I show an estimated book value for most items, adjusted
for condition. These
should not be interpreted as firm, fixed asking prices. Make an
offer I can't refuse!
Items that I have
not yet evaluated and priced are shown with a condition of “TBD”
and price of “ask.” If you are interested in one of
these, email me and I will check it out for you.
If you are
interested in buying an item shown here, email me:
theupstairstrain@gmail.com.
Please include your mailing address so I can calculate shipping
charges and send you an invoice with the total.
Shipping
cost will be actual cost via Priority Mail (for large or heavy
items) or First Class mail (for small, light items), and I will
happily ship items together to minimize shipping costs. I ship
everything insured unless you accept full liability for loss or
damage in shipment.
Submit payment by
ZellePay, bank check, or personal check. Don't waste your money on
a money order or cashier's check.
As much as I would
like to, it is impractical to provide pictures of all these items
because there are so many and because things keep flying off the
shelves. Pictures of both sides, top, and bottom are available on
request. In the meantime, if you're looking for something, ask –
I might just have it.>
To whet your
appetite, here are pictures of some of the engines and other
things I have available.
That
24603 caboose on the second row is the very rare painted version
listed in the 2021 Greenberg Book as “No Reported Sales;”
I'm offering it at the previous Greenberg value of $500. The 734
operating boxcar at the right end of the top row is the
hard-to-find Variation D: brown painted black plastic lettered
"American Flyer Lines." It works well and includes 2
boxes. It is valued at $40. The 23743 Track Maintenance Car on the
bottom row is in TCA excellent condition and runs great. It is
valued at $161. The 21156 Docksider at the bottom right was
recently sold and is no longer available.
