American Flyer S Scale Pacific Steam Engines (3 of 4)

Gilbert made 25 distinct Pacific Steam Engines as listed on a page and a half of the TM Guide, not counting the variations on some of the 25. Lionel made five in 2006 through 2008, and another six in 2021, under the American Flyer name. Because there are so many, I have split them up over four web pages:

Gilbert Pacifics #282 through #296 are on page 1.
                          #310 through #316 are on page 2.
#350 through #21115 are on this page.
Those made by Lionel are on page 4.

Unless otherwise specified, the large pictures on this page are of engines in the collection of The Upstairs Train.

If you have a picture that you would like to share with the world of any of the engines not shown here (or a better picture of one that is shown!), email them to me: theupstairstrain@gmail.com.   Click here for a list of the pictures I need to complete the Gallery.

Click on an engine to see the train(s) it pulled.
When I get all the pages built, that will work for all engines.
For now, it only works for the ones I own.

#350 Royal Blue with wire handrails and serif lettering made only in 1948.
Here's the underside of the engine.
And of the tender. It was converted from the original link couplers when I was a kid.
Harder to find is the variation with block lettering made in 1950.

Even harder to find are variations with the lettering indented.

It was also made in 1950 with cast handrails and block lettering (fairly common).

Extremely rare is a 1950 variation with "The Royal Blue" on both engine and tender.

#353 American Flyer Circus engine made only in 1950.
This one has cast handrails; there is also an extremely rare version with wire handrails.

#354 Painted Silver Bullet made only in 1954.
(This is a picture I took of an engine in Jack Larson's collection.)
#356 Chrome Silver Bullet made only in 1953.

#21084 C&NW Pacific made only in 1957.

#21085 C&NW Pacific made from 1958-1962 with knuckle couplers appeared in
22 freight sets.

The TM Guide says simply "There are many variations."
Greenberg's 1980 First Edition lists 3 and the 1991 Fifth Edition lists 5,
but the descriptions don't match.
My engine above matches Variation A in the First Edition.
The description of Variation A in the First Edition is broad enough to include
both Variation A and B in the Fifth Edition, but my engine doesn't match either A or B.
#21085 CM, St.P & P Pacific made from 1963-1965 with Pike Master couplers
and black driver wheels.
This is variation C in the first Greenbrg edition and version D in the Fifth.

Variation C in the Fifth Edition is a similar C&NW engine.

#21085 CM, St.P & P Pacific made in 1963 with knuckle couplers
and white sided driver wheels.
This is variation B in the first Greenberg edition; it is not listed in the Fifth.

Here's a detailed close-up of that engine.

And its tender.

Variation E in the Fifth Edition is a similar Reading engine.

#21115 Pennsy made in 1958
