Green 95x Pullman Heavyweights | |||||||
In
1953, Gilbert converted its original link couplers to knuckle couplers,
and its sheet metal trucks to sintered trucks, throughout its product
line. They took that opportunity to convert the Pullman
Heavyweights to doors that didn't open. In addition to reducing
the cost of manufacture and assembly, this resulted in a car that was
structurally stronger, better able to survive rough play by young boys The 95x cars have the name of a scenic spot under the windows: Pikes Peak for the 952 coach, Niagara Falls for the 953, and Grand Canyon for the 954. The green cars were made only in 1953 and 1954. |

A small number of painted green 953 & 954 cars were made with opening doors, probably left over 65x bodies mounted on 95x chasses. These are extremely rare. |

These
green Pullman heavyweight cars appeared only in The Meteor Steam
Passenger Set, sold as set #K5328 in 1953 and as #K5436T in 1954.
Unsold inventory was sold in 1955 as the unnamed set #120; it contained
the same engine, cars, and accessories as the 1954 Meteor set.
Pulled by a #293 New Haven Steam Locomotive, it contains the #951 New
Haven Mail Car, #953 Niagara Falls Combination, #952 Pikes Peak coach,
and #954 Grand Canyon Observation Car. The set also includes 12
#702 curved track, 4 #700 straight track, 16 #693 Track Locks, a #690
track terminal, and a #706 uncoupler. Sets #K5436T and #120 also
contained a 4B 100-Watt transformer. |
