American Flyer S Scale Autorack Cars

In the 2017 American Flyer Catalog, Lionel introduced a line of Autorack cars which they called Auto Carriers. Production extended into 2018 and 2019, calling them Autoracks.

#42590 Union Pacific Auto Carrier #ETTX 715001 in the 2017 catalog.


The doors on the end of the car open and tuck out of the way for loading and unloading.
The Auto Carrier is properly sized to hold 1/64 scale automobiles (not included).

The 2017 catalog offered the Norfolk Southern Auto Carrier in three additional car numbers:

#47934 has car number NS 171260.
#47935 has car number NS 171265.


The 2017 catalog offered the BNSF Auto Carrier in three additional car numbers:

#47937 has car number TTGX 965542.

In 2018 & 2019, two additional car numbers were also available for each road name. The catalogs made this offer:

Over the years, Gilbert made four different kinds of couplers, three of which are common and familiar to most American Flyer owners: link, knuckle, and Pike Master. The fourth, the so-called "solid knuckle coupler," was short-lived and not used on very many cars. Lionel later came up with its own version of knuckle coupler. American Flyer has therefore gone through five
generations of couplers. Because there seem to be a lot of people confused by this, I created a page to show the differences. Click the picture below for more detail.
